Petrobras (Bovespa: PETR3/PETR4, NYSE: PBR / PBRA, Latibex: XPBR / XPBRA, BCBA: APBR / APBRA), the BG Group (LON:BG, OTC:BRGYY, PINK:BRGYY, PINK:BRGXF), and Repsol (MCE:REP, NYSE:REP, LI:OJGE, PINK:REPYP, ETR:REPA,NYSE:REP-A, ETR:REP, FRA:REPA, FRA:REP) signed a letter of intentions with the Schahin / Modec (TYO: 6269) consortium Tuesday (01/26) for the chartering and operation of the FPSO that will operate as the hydrocarbons production, storage and offloading unit for the Guará pilot, located in block BM-S-9, in the pre-salt (sub-salt) area of the Santos Basin. Under the document, the agreements will have a term of 20 years.

The FPSO, capable of producing 120,000 barrels of oil and 5 million cubic meters of gas per day, is expected to go on stream in late 2012. The agreement to be signed for the construction of this new FPSO calls for 65% local content. Furthermore, it also determines that the hull will be converted abroad, but its several modules integrated in Brazil.

During the ceremony, Petrobras’ Exploration and Production Director, Guilherme Estrella, highlighted the “importance of including the Brazilian business community in the construction of major oil production units in Brazil and of the consortium formed by Petrobras, BG, and Repsol having approved a project of these dimensions with a high degree of national content.” To Estrella, this project proves the trust major international operators have in the Brazilian industry.

Following suit, the Executive Manager for E&P-PRESAL, José Formigli, emphasized that in addition to the project being the second biggest pilot to be installed in the Santos Basin’s pre-salt (subsalt) area, it is also the first major chartered unit to be converted with a high level of national content, on competitive bases, and with mobilization terms coherent with the production target set for the development of production in the Santos Basin’s Pre-Salt pole. To Formigli: “this is a milestone not only for Petrobras, rather for the entire Brazilian industry."

The Executive Director of the BG Group for the Americas & Global LNG, Martin Houston, and Repsol’s President in Brazil, Javier Moro, also highlighted the importance of the project and of the partnership with Petrobras. They also stated the choice of the consortium that will build the new production unit was the right one. The Executive Director for Schahin, Milton Schahin, and the Sales Director for Modec, Boyd Howell, thanked the trust the contractors have in the consortium that will convert the new unit and praised the joint efforts of the companies involved in the project.

The following executives, among others, attended the ceremony held at Petrobras’ main office building for the signing of the letter of intentions: For Petrobras, its Exploration & Production Director, Guilherme Estrella, the Executive Manager for E&P-PRESAL, José Formigli, and the Manager for the Center Asset of the Santos Basin Business Unit, Engineer Luiz Carlos Mendes; for BG Group, the Executive Director for the Americas & Global LNG, Martin Houston, the CEO of BG Group in Brazil, Nelson Silva, and the Commercial Vice-President for BG Group in Brazil, Ricardo Mucci; for Repsol, the company’s President in Brazil, Javier Moro, the Director for Facility and Production Engineering, Luis Fernando Bensimon, and the Manager for Gas & Oil Trade, Márcio Gonçalves de Carvalho; for Modec, its Sales Director and the Manager for the Guará Project, Boyd Howell and Richard Matten; and for Schahin, its Executive Directors, Milton Schahim and Salim Schahim, in addition to the company’s Commercial Analyst, Rodrigo Rocha Gonçalves.
