Petrobras (Bovespa: PETR3/PETR4, NYSE: PBR / PBRA, Latibex: XPBR / XPBRA, BCBA: APBR / APBRA) and three Brazilian universities (UNESP, UNICAMP and UENF) signed on Tuesday (09/02) a letter of intent with the aim of laying the foundations for future cooperation in technological studies of pre-salt (subsalt) areas of Geosciences and Engineering Reservoir, with a focus on research and training. In view of the great discoveries of oil reserves in carbonate rocks of the Basin of Santos and Campos, Petrobras has been developing studies to enable the commercial exploration of these fields. With that Petrobras also plans to leverage the technological development in these areas of expertise.
On Tuesday there were the first signatures, the first being the headquarters of UNICAMP in Campinas and the second at UNESP in Rio Claro, both in São Paulo. In two ceremonies attended by the Director of Exploration and Production of Petrobras, Guilherme de Oliveira Estrella, and representatives of universities and rectors Herman J. Cornelis Voorwald and Fernando Ferreira Costa, respectively, and the vice president Abel Carrasquilla, the UENF, and other researchers, professors and executives of the Company.
By signing the document, Petrobras aims to begin negotiations for the establishment of the Training and Technology in carbonates (SCTC), giving preference to projects that meet the requirements of "Investment in Research and Development", as described in the Regulation of the National Oil, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP).
To this end, participants will hold meetings, exchange technical information and joint studies on economic feasibility, and nominate representatives to interact with the group that will propose the structure of this system.
According to Estrella, the choice of universities was to start the know-how of univercidade in carbonate rocks, which are found in the layer called pre-salt. He also said that the universities will contribute effectively to understanding of its characteristics, which are still little known by the industry, although they already have huge potential.
Finally the director argued that the commitment will be crucial for the development of research on oil in the country, as the scientific research is the Academy, which ensures the reduction of risk in exploration and production, contributing to business sustainability .
Partner Institutions
Participating institutions were selected as those having recognized expertise in applied studies to pre-salt or subsalt. They are: Universidade Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP), with a focus on geoscientific studies of carbonate sedimentary systems, State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) focused on the area of Geophysics, Geology and Petroleum Engineering (Geoengineering) and Curriculum in Geoscience.
Also participating the Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro (UENF) in evaluation projects reservoirs, and the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) and Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), with a focus in the study area of current geological models, similar, applied to the pre-salt or subsalt.
Besides these universities, which will act as coordinators in specific studies, the system should include other institutions of science and technology, improving the model of relationship that began in 2006 through the Thematic Networks and Regional Centers of Competence.
