The Term of Commitment between the Government of the State of Rio Grande do Norte and Petrobras (Bovespa: PETR3/PETR4, NYSE: PBR / PBRA, Latibex: XPBR / XPBRA, BCBA: APBR / APBRA) will be signed this Thursday, at 3 PM, in Guamaré, to kick-off the infrastructure construction work for the Potiguar Clara Camarão Refinery (RPCC), aiming to boost the installed capacity and deploy a gasoline production unit. The signing ceremony will be attended by the president of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. With the work that will be done, the refinery, which already produces liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), diesel fuel and aviation kerosene (QAV), will also produce gasoline and petrochemical naphtha as of 2010.
The Potiguar Clara Camarão Refinery currently processes oil produced in the Rio Grande do Norte onshore and offshore fields and, as all Petrobras refineries, can also process pre-salt oil. The current processing capacity is 30,000 barrels of oil a day. With the new infrastructure and enhancement work, the RPCC will produce 4,500 barrels per day of gasoline, making the state self-sufficient in this product.
Since its deployment, the refinery, located in the Guamaré Industrial Pole, received investments in the order of $1.65 billion. The investment in facility enhancement will top at $215 million, totaling $1.86 billion. After the construction work has been completed, Clara Camarão will count on a new set of floats capable of mooring 50,000-ton vessels, in addition to a automotive gasoline production unit. Therefore, Rio Grande do Norte will have a modern refinery, which after completed will produce 21,000 cubic meters of gasoline, 45,000 cubic meters of diesel, 7,500 cubic meters of QAV, 11,700 cubic meters of LPG and 3,000 cubic meters of chemical naphtha per month.
The refinery’s name is a tribute to Clara Camarão, a Brazilian native who led a group of natives in the struggle against the Dutch during colonization. Clara Camarão commanded a female battalion which had a decisive performance in the battle which took place in the city of Porto Calvo, in 1637.
The Potiguar Clara Camarão refinery is one of the five refining units Petrobras designed to increase its refining capacity by 1.2 million barrels a day by 2015. Petrobras’ current refining capacity in Brazil is 1.9 million barrels a day, above the domestic demand for oil products, today around 1.8 million barrels per day. This will afford Petrobras a surplus in oil products, particularly high-quality diesel fuel for exports.
