The carbon content in the deep-sea oil province at pre-salt can be variable and that will demand more investment, to balance economic growth and environmental preservation during the future exploitation of oil in the region, in an area from the continental platform which begins in the state of Espírito Santo and reaches Santa Catarina State.
The statement was made by the representative of Brazilian State Oil Company – Petrobras (Bovespa: PETR3/PETR4, NYSE: PBR / PBRA, Latibex: XPBR / XPBRA, BCBA: APBR / APBRA) – Beatriz Espinosa, in a public hearing at the Joint Committee on Climate Change held to discuss the compensation mechanisms for greenhouse gas emissions due to the extraction of oil in pre-salt layer. The committee is chaired by senator Ideli Salvatti (PT-SC).
-Beatriz Espinosa explained Petrobras’ strategic plan for the next few years, according to which there will be voluntary goals to reduce carbon emissions, which, currently, are estimated in 50 million tons per year in the operations of the company throughout the world. She also explained that Petrobras is looking for a way to store carbon in production fields already exhausted or in salt caverns.
Senator Jefferson Praia (PDT-AM), who attended the hearing, believes it would be ideal for Brazil to look for more information about the region where pre-salt platforms will be located, taking into consideration that the country does not even have a “study of the region and of its life-cycle”. He also said that pre-salt needs to produce wealth for the indians in the Amazon and for the local population, around 25 million inhabitants.
