USIMINAS and UFRJ sign agreement for the pre-salt

Usiminas (Bovespa SAO: USIM5, USIM3 and USIM6 - OTC: USNZY) and Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute for Graduate Studies and Research (Coppe) of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), signed an agreement on cooperation in science and technology at the Technology Center in Ilha do Fundão. The agreement was signed by Vice President of Business of Usiminas, Sergio Leite, and the Director of Technology and Innovation of Coppe, Segen Estefen.

Regarding news published by the press Friday (02/12) about the results of the extended well test (EWT) for Tupi, which was kicked-off in May 2009, Petrobras (Bovespa: PETR3/PETR4, NYSE: PBR / PBRA, Latibex: XPBR / XPBRA, BCBA: APBR / APBRA) clarifies the EWT has been taking place as planned by the Company, and that its main objective is to collect technical information for the development of the pre-salt (subsalt) reservoirs.

Petrobras (Bovespa: PETR3/PETR4, NYSE: PBR / PBRA, Latibex: XPBR / XPBRA, BCBA: APBR / APBRA) and three Brazilian universities (UNESP, UNICAMP and UENF) signed on Tuesday (09/02) a letter of intent with the aim of laying the foundations for future cooperation in technological studies of pre-salt (subsalt) areas of Geosciences and Engineering Reservoir, with a focus on research and training. In view of the great discoveries of oil reserves in carbonate rocks of the Basin of Santos and Campos, Petrobras has been developing studies to enable the commercial exploration of these fields. With that Petrobras also plans to leverage the technological development in these areas of expertise.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that oil production in the pre-salt (subsalt) will allow Brazil to have "leeway" in fuel prices. Lula said that amid high fuel prices, prompting the government to reduce the percentage of ethanol blends in gasoline and reduce the recovery of the Contribution on Intervention in the Economic Domain (CIDE) in these products.

The Chairman of the House of Deputies of Brazil, Michel Temer (PMDB-SP), said he intends to put to a vote the projects dealing with oil exploration in the pre-salt (subsalt), but do not believe that the voting is completed before the carnival.
